Ilja Van Leerdam started playing soccer when he was six-years-old for Mifano, an amateur club in the Netherlands. When he was 13 he went to PSV Eindhoven and played there for seven years, signing a pro contract with the club for the last two years. After PSV Van Leerdam moved to Helmond Sport for two years and played in the second division in the Netherlands. Then De Graafschap bought him and he played there for four years. After that Van Leerdam moved to FC Eindhoven for a year-and-a-half and then back to Helmond Sport for the last four-and-a-half years. Van Leerdam signed with FC Edmonton in July, 2011
