Elvir was born in Croatia, and had lived in Germany for five years before settling down in London Ontario. He was nine when he had his first competitive try-out, with London United, where he played for two years. Moving to London City after, he played with that club team for the next 3 years. He moved next to Dorchester and played in the OYSL for the next 4 years. He was then picked up by St Mary’s University in Halifax. After two years in Halifax, he was scouted by FC Edmonton and brought to Edmonton.
