As the Stars approached the end of the 2012 season with goals in short supply, they acquired Jamie Watson on loan through the end of the season from USL Pro side Orlando City Soccer Club. A proven goalscorer at the Stars' level, Watson was a member of the 2010 USSF D2 Pro League Best XI after tallying seven goals and six assists for the Austin Aztex.

When the Aztex relocated to Orlando for 2011 and joined USL Pro, Watson went with the club, and was an integral part of the 2011 side that won both the USL Pro regular season and playoff championships. Despite some struggle with injury in 2012, Watson featured in 23 games for Orlando City, scoring five goals and dishing off two assists.

Watson is familiar to Stars fans as a frequent adversary against Minnesota's teams. He first played against a Minnesota side in the 2005 US Open Cup as a member of Real Salt Lake and was a thorn in the Stars' side in 2010 during their debut season as a member of the Aztex. In two games between the Stars and Austin—both Austin victories—Watson played a role in all four Aztex goals, drawing a penalty and scoring the late gamewinner in a match at NSC Stadium and assisting on both goals in a 2-0 shutout in Austin.
