Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Fordyce started playing with a youth soccer team at St. Andrew's school in Belfast. From the ages of 11 to 16, he played with the Glasgow Rangers and their youth side. When he was 16, he moved to Portsmouth, where at the age of 18, he signed his first professional contract with the club at the age of 18. He then came back to Belfast to play for Glentoran FC for the next four years. After with the league with Glentoran FC, he moved to Linfield FC - Glentoran's biggest rivals in Belfast. There, he won the double (league and cup) with the team in his first season.
