CARY, N.C. (April 28, 2012) - The San Antonio Scorpions pick up three valuable points on the road as they beat the Carolina RailHawks 0-1 at WakeMed Soccer Park. The win was San Antonio's first in the NASL. Scorpions skipper, Kevin Harmse accounted for the only goal of the match
The game went back and forth throughout the first half with the Scorpions taking control of much of the first half. San Antonio’s Fabian Kling received a yellow card in the 12th minute after a late tackle on Zimmerman. The RailHawks had a good chance on the ensuing free kick but it was cleared by the Scorpions. In the last play of the half, San Antonio’s Josue Soto hit a shot off the crossbar, but the score remained 0-0.
The RailHawks came out in the second half pushing for a goal. Cory Elenio fired a shot in the 62nd minute, but it hit the crossbar. The rest of the half had chances for both teams, and in the 82nd minute, Harmse scored after a quick give and go with Esteban Bayona. In the 89th minute, Ty Shipalane almost tied up the game, but was called offside.
San Antonio Goalkeeper Daryl Sattler made his first start of the season recording a clean sheet after making four crucial saves to keep his goal intact.
The first ever win for the Scorpions gives them five points after four games. Carolina has just three points from five matches.
“It’s disappointing. The first half was even, but we showed a lot of character in the second half,” said RailHawks head coach Colin Clarke. “We got after them and attacked, we just needed the goal. We are moving in the right direction and just need to keep our heads up. Fortunately, we have the opportunity to get back on the field next Wednesday.”
