Match Preview: San Antonio vs. Minnesota
Scorpions Host the Stars on Saturday
Posted on Fri, Jun 1, 2012

The San Antonio Scorpions host the undefeated Minnesota Stars FC on Saturday night at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. With just one point separating the two sides in the NASL standings, there is everything to play for in this one.

Both the Scorpions and the Stars pulled off upsets versus MLS opposition in midweek U.S. Open Cup action. Cross-state rivals the Houston Dynamo visited Heroes Stadium for an all-Texas affair that the Scorpions were able to edge 1-0 thanks to a Hans Denissen penalty kick. At the Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, MLS leaders Real Salt Lake were comprehensively beaten 3-1 by the travelling Minnesota Stars courtesy of goals by Kevin Venegas, Neil Hlavaty, and Simone Bracalello. The match was attended by more than 17,000 fans, a US Open Cup record for a non-final match. The wins mean that the Scorpions and the Stars advance to the fourth round of the cup to face the Charlotte Eagles and the San Jose Earthquakes, respectively.

Saturday night’s match will be the first ever meeting between expansion side San Antonio Scorpions, and the defending NASL champions Minnesota Stars FC. Both teams are on unbeaten streaks coming into this match. SAn Antonio is unbeaten in its last eight games in all competitions while Minnesota has not lost in twelve consecutive games in all competitions since last season's NASL playoffs.
