Match Preview: Edmonton vs Fort Lauderdale
FC Edmonton Hosts Strikers on Sunday
Posted on Sat, Jun 9, 2012

FC Edmonton and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers face off at Clarke Stadium for the first off two consecutive matches against each other. The following Saturday, in a reverse of this fixture, Fort Lauderdale will host Edmonton at Lockhart Stadium.

The hosts are winless during their current three-game home stand, after letting a 2-0 goal lead slip to draw against the San Antonio Scorpions, before suffering a 2-1 loss against a 10-man Atlanta Silverbacks side. The Eddies will want to take all three points from the Strikers in this one before having to travel to South Florida in a week’s time.

The Strikers will be full of confidence heading into this fixture. The team is coming off of a first-ever victory against bitter rivals the Tampa Bay Rowdies, enduring five losses and four draws in just over two years. After going a goal behind, captain for the day Abe Thompson leveled the score from the penalty spot before goal-scoring sensation Mark Anderson put the Strikers in front with a goal of the season contender from around the corner flag. Walter Restrepo doubled the Strikers’ lead with a goal in stoppage time.

In the first match of the season, the Strikers defeated FC Edmonton 1-0 at Lockhart Stadium courtesy of a debut goal from Andy Herron. Last season, the Strikers took four points from Edmonton on the road, and remain unbeaten against Edmonton when playing in Canada.
