FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (June 16, 2012) – The Fort Lauderdale Strikers (4W-4T-4L) defeated FC Edmonton (3W-2T-6L) 1-0 in front of 2,663 fans at Lockhart Stadium on Saturday, June 16th. Strikers forward Andy Herron scored the game-winning goal in the 68th minute with Walter Restrepo picking up the assist. It was the third meeting of the season between the two teams with all three games decided by a final of 1-0.
“All week we talked about getting balls across the face of goal and guys in the box,” said Strikers head coach Daryl Shore. "It finally paid off in the second half with Andy."
The Strikers were controlling the majority of play in the first half until the 22nd minute when a challenge from Edmonton's Kenny Caceros left the Strikers' Polo Morales injured. Morales appeared to injure his lower leg, had to be stretchered off the field and was taken to Broward General Hospital for further evaluation. More details will be released when confirmation is given by team physicians.
The Strikers were unable to regroup and score as the first half ended 0-0.
In the second half, Edmonton started to have more opportunities as Shaun Saiko led several counter-attacks. One where he passed to a streaking Michael Cox. Saiko expected a return pass, but Cox fired a shot direct on goal which went just wide of the net.
The Strikers finally broke through in the 68th minute when Walter Restrepo dribbled past his defender toward the end line and sent a low hard cross across the face of goal where Andy Herron was there to score his fourth gal of the season. The assist was Restrepo's fifth on the year.
