Islanders Fall in CFU Semifinals
Puerto Rico Must Win Thursday to Qualify For CONCACAF Champions League
Posted on Wed, Jun 20, 2012

The Puerto Rico Islanders fell 4-1 in the semifinals of the CFU Clubs Championship. The Islanders play this Thursday against Antigua Barracudas FC for the final spot in the CONCACAF Champions League.

“Obviously everybody is disappointed after the loss last night but now is not the time to dwell on the past but to stay positive moving forward. There are many other teams that would like to be in our position knowing that with a win, we would be in the Group Stage with Isidro Metapan and LA Galaxy. Sure the boys may be a little down but we are not out. I know one thing for sure, I will have the team fighting with me on Thursday,” said Head Coach Adrian Whitbread.

The Islanders started the match aggressive, Anthony Vázquez took advantage of a cross inside the box, but his header sailed high.

Moments later, Richard Martin was forced to make a spectacular save after a violent shot from W-Connection.

Right before the end of the first half Rennie Britto got behind the Islanders back line and beat Martin one on one scoring the first goal of the match.

The Islanders came out more organized and created more offensive opportunities in the second half.

The captain, Noah Delgado, fired a shot from the top of the box, but it sailed just wide of the frame.

Moments later Jonathan Faña beat W Connection's back line, but once again the W Connection goal keeper made a spectacular save.

W Connection took advantage of the Islanders pushing their back line forward and the Trinidadian clubs top goal scorer, Jerrel Britto, scored on a counter attack giving the T&T Champions a two goal advantage.

Ten minutes later, Rennie Britto took advantage of an Islanders mistake and beat Martin scoring his second goal of the match and the third goal for W Connection.

In the 76th minute Josh Hansen blasted a ball inside the box giving the Islanders their only goal of the match.

Hashim Arcia scored in extra time, assuring W Connection their spot in CONCACAF Champions League.

Dont forget the Puerto Rico Islanders play this Thursday against Antigua Barracudas FC to see who will earn the final spot in the CONCACAF Champions League. The winner of that match up will play in Group 5 with the Los Angeles and Isidro Metapan. You can follow all the action LIVE on  the Islanders Facebook page and Twitter account.
