The NASL Combine may just be a three day event, but for many of the participants that hope to play professional soccer in the NASL, it could be the biggest three days of their lives. Sean Arters, who spent last year with the San Antonio Scorpions Reserves is one of those players.
After years of hard work and a never-say-die attitude, the 24 year-old from San Antonio, Texas is finally getting his chance to prove that he can make it as a pro soccer player.
“I’m hoping to show my attributes on the field” said Arters. “It’s such a great opportunity to be seen by all the coaches from all the NASL teams. I feel like I have a lot to offer them.”
He was working as a Facility Coordinator at the South Texas Area Regional (STAR) Soccer Complex, an affiliate of Morgan’s Wonderland, the World’s First Ultra Accessible Family Fun Park. The park’s founder, Gordon Hartman, is the owner of the San Antonio Scorpions.
While working at STAR Soccer Complex, Arters would look on as Scorpions practiced on the fields that he maintained and wished he were right there with them. He was given a chance to prove himself to the Scorpions coaching staff, and impressed enough to make the reserve team.
“[San Antonio] was a great experience.” said Arters. “I got to train with the first team, and play a lot of reserve team matches.” Arters featured in several reserve matches including against regional PDL powerhouse Laredo Heat.
In addition to playing, Arters ran camps and sold merchandise for the Scorpions. Now he’s looking to make good on his chance and sign his first professional contract with an NASL side.
Arters is among the 68 players at the 2013 NASL Combine which resumes Saturday at 1:30pm ET in Fort Lauderdale.
