The Rowdies brought onboard veteran Stuart Campbell for the 2012 season to strengthen its midfield. Campbell played a key role both on the field during matches, as well as in training, becoming one of the main leaders of the 2012 championship squad.

Prior to joining the Rowdies, Campbell began his professional career with Leicester City in 1996. After four seasons with them, he then played four seasons for Grimsby. While playing at Grimsby, he made 117 league appearances and scored 10 goals. In the summer of 2004, Campbell signed with Bristol Rovers. He played a crucial role for the club and was appointed captain of the squad in 2006. While captaining the squad in 2006, he led them to the final of the Football League Trophy and their promotion into League One. Before his departure from the Rovers, Campbell was appointed caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Originally from Corby, England, the 35 year old embarks on his 2^nd season with the Rowdies. Since his arrival, Campbell has helped keep the team concentrated and on the right path to success. As a player-assistant coach, Campbell’s role is extremely important as he is an extension of Head Coach Ricky Hill on the field.

“I assist Ricky in any way that I can,” said Campbell. “Whether it involves taking over a training session or just being vocal while leading the team on the pitch during game day.”

Head Coach Ricky Hill praised the midfielder’s role on the team, commenting on how comfortable he is with having Campbell as an assistant coach as well as a player.

“When we brought Stu to the club, we knew he was going to be just as important off the field as on the field,” stated Hill. “He understands my coaching philosophy and since his arrival he has helped me transmit that to the players. He fits perfectly with the organization, as his attributes led this team to the championship last season.”

The Corby native played an important role in the Rowdies success in 2012 and hopes to have another great season 2013. Campbell’s experiences playing in the United Kingdom compared to his current experience at the Rowdies has helped him learn many different aspects and cultures of the game. For Campbell, “the biggest difference is the climate. It’s extremely hot here, whereas in the UK it can be very wet and cold. In my opinion, the speed of the game is actually very similar. However, regarding the heat, they seem to be a lot fitter and more athletic over here.”

Campbell looks forward to the upcoming season and is very happy with his experiences in the United States. “I prefer it over here. I’m married with three young daughters and it was always an ambition of mine to come and live and work in America. Thankfully, the Rowdies gave me that opportunity. For me, the way of life over here for both myself and my family, which is the most important thing in my life, is better.”
