Langley, British Columbia (March 26, 2013) – Anxious to play, FC Edmonton’s first real test of the 2013 pre-season came today, Tuesday March 26, against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Reserves side at UBC Thunderbird Stadium.
Millers’ starting 11 was comprised of the same players that made up the Blue team in Saturday’s inter-squad match: Lance Parker in goal, Eddie Edward, Mallan Roberts, Adrian LeRoy and Lance Laing on the backline, Massimo Mirabelli, Neil Hlavaty, Edem Mortotsi and Shaun Saiko in midfield, and Michael Cox and Daryl Fordyce up top.
The first half hour of the match was played in midfield, with both teams failing to break through on the attack. It was at the 30 minute mark when the ‘Caps pulled ahead. Parker ended up making the initial save, but the rebound fell to Paulo Jr., who made no mistake finding the back of the net.
Both teams went into the locker room at half time with the Whitecaps in the lead 1-0.
After a promising restart - Wes Knight came on to replace Mirabelli, but it was once again the Whitecaps who capitalized on an opportunity in front of net. The ball was passed to Whitecaps front-man Tommy Heinemann, who took on two Eddie defenders before taking a shot that eluded Parker to allow the Vancouver side to double their lead 2-0.
It didn’t take much longer for the Eddies to regain composure. In the 53 minute, all the pressure that Cox and Fordyce continued to place on the backline ended up in a turnover, and Cox’s shot rolled across the goal line, with an added touch from Fordyce.
2-1 for the Whitecaps.
It took less than 10 minutes for the Whitecaps to add another goal to their lead when Paulo Jr. sent a ball over the top of the Eddies backline to Kekuta Manneh, who finished past Parker.
FC Edmonton continued to press forward and a goal from former-Whitecap Wes Knight brought the game back to a one-goal difference. Laing’s cross came in from the left and Knight took one touch before sending the shot past Brad Knighton in the Whitecaps goal.
It looked like the Eddies would have a chance to tie the game up when the ‘Caps midfielder Aminu Abdallah went in to tackle Hlavaty and the referee showed him a straight red card for the challenge.
Even with the man advantage, the Eddies were unable to find the equalizer and ended up conceding a fourth and final goal from Whitecaps substitute Corey Hertzog.
“Overall, I’m pleased with the match,” said Head Coach Colin Miller after the game. “We had some defensive errors that resulted in goals, but they’re all mistakes that we can fix in upcoming matches.”
The team’s next match is against the University of Fraser Valley on Wednesday March 27, where most of the subs from today’s game will get a chance to show their skills for 90 minutes.
