Striker Hans Denissen scored the go-ahead goal and also had an assist to lead the San Antonio Scorpions to a 4-1 triumph over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and remain in contention to win the 2013 NASL spring season and host Soccer Bowl. His performance at Lockhart Stadium earns the Dutchman North American Soccer League Player of the Week honors.
While trailing 1-0, Denissen assisted on the tying goal in the 35th minute when he chased a ball played into the penalty area, prevented it from going out of bounds and crossed for fellow forward Eriq Zavaleta to poke his shot past goalkeeper Lionel Brown. Denissen scored the eventual game-winner in the 56th minute, claiming his sixth goal of the season for a total that is second best in the league, off a cross from defender Stephen DeRoux.
The Scorpions closed out the scoring with goals midfielders Kevin Harmse and Bryan Jordan in the 67th and 90th minutes respectively.
“I am glad to be acknowledged as the Player of the Week, but overall it was a good result for us and a great team effort that led to the three points,” said Denisson, who has scored four goals in the past three games. “My goal is to help the team win and help them reach the Soccer Bowl this week, but I am happy to be given this award by the league.”
Scorpions coach Tim Hankinson commented. “Hans is certainly on a good streak right now and it’s at a time that we needed it. He has focused his game lately, and that’s where we need him right now.”
San Antonio can win the NASL title on Thursday, July 4, by beating the Carolina RailHawks at home by three goals or better, provided the Atlanta Silverbacks do not win away to Minnesota United FC.
Denissen, a native of Tilburg, Netherlands, played with local sides Willem II, RBC Rossendaal, MVV, FC Emmen and has had a stints with Ayia Napa FC of Cyprus and Finnish club FC Haka prior to signing with the Scorpions last year, where he scored four goals and dished out four assists.
