San Antonio Scorpions striker Hans Denissen was the overwhelming choice for the North American Soccer League Player of the Month award for June when media who cover the league regularly cast their vote.
The Dutch forward ended the NASL Spring Season as the joint-leading scorer alongside Brian Shriver of the Carolina RailHawks on eight goals, having scored six goals in the last four games of the season. Denissen was named to the NASL Team of the Week for four consecutive weeks.
“It is an outstanding recognition and absolutely deserved,” said Scorpions coach Tim Hankinson. “He has been successful at scoring goals over the month to put us in position to be one point out of first place and a title. He has really put the team in his shoulders and we hope that continues into the Fall Season.”
Denissen, a native of Tilburg, Netherlands, played with local sides Willem II, RBC Rossendaal, MVV, FC Emmen and has had a stints with Ayia Napa FC of Cyprus and Finnish club FC Haka prior to signing with the Scorpions last year, where he scored four goals and had four assists.
“It's a great feeling to be acknowledged for the whole period of June,” said Denissen. “It's a great feeling to help myself and my teammates accomplish the achievement of winning five games in a row.”

Denissen’s streak of hot form began on June 15 when he responded to being dropped to the substitute’s bench for a visit to Tampa Bay with a goal in the dying minutes to steal a 2-1 win over the Rowdies as he came on for the final eight minutes.
The following week, at home to FC Edmonton at Toyota Field, Denissen again struck late as his injury time winner, added to his sixth minute strike, gave him his third goal in two games and kept the Scorpions in contention for the Spring Season title.
A week later he again found the net to give the Scorpions a 2-1 lead in Fort Lauderdale on the way to a 4-1 away win that gave San Antonio a mathematical chance of finishing on top of the standings on the Fourth of July. Denissen also had an assist and was recognized with the NASL Player of the Week award.
An Independence Day double secured a 2-0 win over the Carolina RailHawks, but with the Atlanta Silverbacks also winning, San Antonio fell short in their title bid.
Performances in the Fourth of July games that closed out the spring campaign were included in the Player of the Month voting.
In total, eight players were nominated for the June NASL Player of the Month award. The other candidates for recognition were:
Pablo Campos, Forward – Minnesota United FC
Cesar Elizondo, Midfielder – Carolina RailHawks
Kupono Low, Defender – Carolina RailHawks
Ruben Luna, Forward – Atlanta Silverbacks
Richie Menjivar, Midfielder – Atlanta Silverbacks
Brian Shriver, Forward – Carolina RailHawks
Blake Wagner, Defender – San Antonio Scorpions
Tampa Bay Rowdies midfielder Luke Mulholland earned the NASL Player of the Month award for April, and Minnesota United FC forward Simone Bracalello won the honor in May.
