The Atlanta Silverbacks’ attack just received a major boost. Mexican forward Ruben Luna, who scored seven goals in all competitions during the Silverbacks’ championship-winning spring campaign, has agreed to terms on a contract, the club announced Thursday.
Luna, a former member of Mexico’s U-20 national team, joined the Silverbacks before the season after leaving MLS side FC Dallas. He was an instant hit in Atlanta, scoring a total of seven goals in 13 appearances in NASL and U.S. Open Cup play.
“We’re thrilled to bring Ruben back to the Silverbacks family,” said Silverbacks General Manager Andy Smith. “He scored a lot of important goals for us during the Spring Season Championship run, but he is also a first-class guy who works hard and treats his teammates and his coaches with the utmost respect.”
The Ciudad Victoria, Mexico native left Atlanta in July to pursue a playing opportunity in Europe, but has now returned ready to help the Silverbacks finish what they started this spring. Luna’s arrival comes at a good time, with the Silverbacks recently experiencing somewhat of a dry spell when it comes to goal scoring.
Although the Silverbacks have only lost once in their last seven games, they have only managed eight goals during that period, meaning the team has had to rely heavily on their defense. A player like Luna, with a strong scoring record and reliable finishing skills, should help the Silverbacks improve in the attack.
The Silverbacks, who earned the right to host the league’s championship game, NASL Soccer Bowl 2013, in November, will travel to New York City this Saturday for a historic matchup against one of America’s most storied clubs, the New York Cosmos.
Luna, who hasn’t played for the Silverbacks since July 4 when he scored against Minnesota United FC, could travel with the team to New York City this weekend, and could even feature against the Cosmos on Saturday..
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. and the game can be seen live online at OneWorldSports.com/Watch. For those that would like to watch the game with other Silverbacks fans, the club will be hosting a viewing party at the Elder Tree Public House in East Atlanta Village.
