The San Antonio Scorpions will host a charity auction immediately following their October 5th NASL match against the Atlanta Silverbacks, with all proceeds earmarked for the WINGS Foundation of San Antonio.
Scorpions players will be wearing specially designed pink Nike jerseys during their game with Atlanta to signify their support for breast cancer research. Each game worn jersey will be auctioned off following the conclusion of the match, along with other unique items donated from a number of different organizations. The charity auction will take place at Toyota Field where the limited edition pink jerseys will be worn for the first time.
"We have planned this event for months, however it took on added importance to us when Maggie Hartman, wife of Scorpions owner Gordon Hartman, was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago and proceeded to undergo surgery," said Scorpions President Howard Cornfield. "Her courage has been an inspiration to us all as she makes a full recovery thanks to early detection. Maggie wants to help and inspire others that are going through the same fight and we dedicate this event to her as well as others fighting this battle."
The charity auction will mark a truly unique and original benefit auction. Scorpions players and staff will be actively participating in the auction throughout its duration. The players will be performing skits and showing off previously unknown special talents, like Esteban Bayona’s uncanny impression of the late legend, Michael Jackson, making the event a truly fun and exciting one. Previously recorded skits by the coaches and players will also be shown on the Scorp-Board during the event.
The auction, which will become an annual event, also represents just another example of the overall mission of the Scorpions: Soccer for a Cause. The organization continues to find a way to benefit the community in the light of Gordon Hartman's inspiration for bringing the organization into its existence.
“Maggie’s main purpose in going public is because she wants to promote early detection,” said Hartman. “Because she had regular check-ups, she caught her cancer early and will be fine. She is Stage 1A which is comparatively one of the better stages to have---early detection made the difference because this was an aggressive cancer and was HER2 positive.”
The Scorpions and Atlanta Silverbacks will kick off at 7:30 pm on October 5th and the auction will follow immediately after. Tickets for this match are already on sale and can be purchased by calling 210-495-8686 or by visiting sascorpions.com.
