The San Antonio Scorpions announced on Friday, the signing of forward Sainey Touray and midfielder Ciaran O'Brien; and have taken striker Dennis Chin on loan from Orlando City FC for the remainder of the 2013 NASL Season. All three deals are pending and still subject to NASL and United States Soccer Federation clearance.
"At this point of the season, it is challenging to bring in talent, but we have been able to bring in three top quality players this week," said Interim Head Coach, Alen Marcina. "These are very talented guys and two of them are strikers who have proven that they can score goals and help create goals. Ciaran is a guy with experience in this league and knows what it takes to be successful, so we know that they will add a spark to our roster."
Chin joins the Scorpions after winning the 2013 USL Pro Championship with Orlando, scoring four goals and notching three assists in the playoff run to the title. Two of the four goals occurred in the Championship, including scores in the 70th and 90th minutes in the 7-4 rout of the Charlotte Eagles.
Originally born in Kingston, Jamaica, Chin has been a mainstay in Central Florida since joining the Lions in 2011, quickly becoming a fan favorite. The striker had his biggest year in 2012, scoring 11 goals in the USL PRO regular season- capturing the league's Golden Boot.
Touray joins the Scorpions after previously playing with the Harrisburg City Islanders. Over 53 appearances with the Islanders since 2011, the Gambian international scored 18 goals from the striker position. In 2012, Touray was named to the USL Pro Best Eleven at the end of the season. He has also had stints with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer and the Carolina RailHawks after previously playing in his home country of Gambia.
The 6'1 forward has featured for both the Gambian U-17 and U-20 teams, becoming the golden boot winner in the U-17 Ivorian Four-Nation Football Tournament.
O'Brien was born in Federal Way, Washington and was named as the Washington State Gatorade Player of the Year in his senior season of high school. He attended the University of San Diego before transferring to UC Santa Barbara where he helped lead the team to the 2007 National Tournament.
After spending time with the Tacoma Tide in the USL Premier Developmental League, O'Brien was selected fifth overall in the 2008 MLS Superdraft by the Colorado Rapids. During his tenure in Colorado, the midfielder spent time on loan with the Seattle Sounders, Austin Aztex, and Montreal Impact. In 2010, O'Brien won the MLS Cup with the Rapids, beating FC Dallas 2-1 to take home the ultimate prize in Major League Soccer.
Following his tenure in MLS, the Washington native and former Generation Adidas signee appeared in over 50 games combined with the Atlanta Silverbacks and Carolina RailHawks.
Pending clearance, the three signings will bring the Scorpions roster to 25 with five games left to play in the 2013 NASL Season. The Scorpions take on the Atlanta Silverbacks this Saturday on Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Toyota Field starting at 7:30 PM.
