FC Edmonton announced Tuesday that the club has come to terms with fullback Johann Smith for the Eddies 2015 North American Soccer League (NASL) roster. Smith had been on trial with the squad since the team opened training camp on Feb. 20. His contract is pending ITC approval.Â
“I’m very excited with the signing of Johann,†FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. “The pace that he brings, the athleticism he brings to the team, he could play in a number of positions. He can play at left fullback, left wing and also up front. That fact that he can play in a number of positions and has the attitude and willingness to learn, I think he’ll be a terrific signing for us.â€Â
Smith, 27, brings a wealth of experience to FC Edmonton. The Hartford, CT., native began his professional career with England’s Bolton Wanderers in 2007. Smith has had stints with a variety of clubs since, including 14 appearances with Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC from 2008-09.
“It’s not enough to just sign a contract and sit back and relax,†Smith said. “I’m looking forward to training even harder than I did before and improve every day. I’m happy but more so focused.â€
Smith has also found success at the youth level, representing the United States at the U-20 level, scoring four goals in five appearances.
Fellow trialist, Sebastian Carbrera, saw his trial with the club end last Friday. Carbrera was not offered a contact.Â
