FC Edmonton will be playing their third game this week when they take on the San Antonio Scorpions at Clarke Field on Sunday, May 17 (4 p.m. ET KO). After a disheartening defeat away to New York last weekend and a 1-1 draw away to the Vancouver Whitecaps midweek in the Amway Canadian Championship, the Eddies will continue a busy Spring Season schedule this weekend at home.
“This is another big match for the players and our fans to look forward to,” FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. “Every fixture we play just gets bigger and bigger. We are playing well at the moment, and we’re also at home, but we will need to recharge our batteries a bit. We’re playing against last season’s NASL Champions, so we’re looking forward to a big match this Sunday.”
Last time the Eddies (1W-2D-2L, 5 points) played against San Antonio, the Canadian side traveled down to Texas and were handed a 3-0 loss. Aside from goalkeeper Lance Parker stopping a penalty shot, FC Edmonton were down to nine men for the majority of the second half after losing Eddie Edward and Cristian Raudales to red cards.
Tomi Ameobi and Ritchie Jones both lead the Eddies in scoring with three goals each in the NASL. Ameobi and Jones both were on the score sheet against the Cosmos in the 4-2 defeat. Lance Laing has been on great form lately, and he leads the Eddies with three assists in league play. FC Edmonton goalkeeper Matt VanOekel is in inspired form as well, after putting in a strong performance in the Amway Canadian Championship.
The Scorpions (1-1-3, 4) defeated the Carolina RailHawks, 1-0, in their last match, as Bright Dike scored the winner in the 79th minute from a Bill Forbes pass.
