Several NASL players returned to their national teams for World Cup qualifying duty. FC Edmonton midfielder Dustin Corea returned to the Salvadoran side for the first time since the Gold Cup, while Ottawa Fury FC’s Julian de Guzman set a record in Canada.
Here is a rundown of how each player fared on international duty:
FC Edmonton midfielder Dustin Corea (El Salvador) – The midfielder featured in both of El Salvador’s World Cup qualifying matches. He started and played all 90 minutes as the Salvadorans fell to Mexico, 3-0, in the Estadio Azteca. In El Salvador, Corea looked dangerous from the outset, starting and playing 65 minutes in a scoreless draw with Canada.
Ottawa Fury FC midfielder Julian de Guzman (Canada) – The captain of the Canadian national team started and played 78 minutes in a 1-0 win over Honduras in World Cup qualifying to tie the career appearances mark. He then surpassed Paul Stalteri’s record, making his 85th appearance in a 0-0 draw with El Salvador. De Guzman played 71 minutes in the contest.
Jacksonville Armada FC defender Shawn Nicklaw (Guam) – The defender started in both of the Matao’s World Cup qualifying matches. He went the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 loss to India and then was replaced in the 85th minute by his brother, Travis, in Guam’s 6-0 loss to Iran.
Jacksonville Armada FC defender Mechack Jérôme (Haiti) – The defender played all 180 minutes in Haiti’s pair of World Cup qualifiers. Les Grenadiers, however, fell by the same scoreline of 1-0 to Costa Rica and Jamaica.
Jacksonville Armada FC midfielder Pascal Millien (Haiti) – After not featuring in the match against Costa Rica, Millien played the final nine minutes against Jamaica.
Atlanta Silverbacks goalkeeper Steward Ceus (Haiti) – The 6-foot-6 ‘keeper was on the bench for both of Haiti’s matches.
