The New York Cosmos announced Friday the signing of defender/midfielder Gabriel Farfán on loan for the Spring Season from Liga MX side Chiapas FC.

A San Diego native with experience as a U.S. youth international, Farfán has donned the colors of Chiapas in Mexico’s first division since 2014, first on loan from Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chivas USA, who later sold him to Chiapas. He has made 14 appearances for the Jaguares, scoring once in 661 minutes on the pitch in league and Copa MX action.

Farfán began his career in MLS with the Philadelphia Union, playing alongside his twin brother, Michael, from 2011-13. He appeared in 51 regular season matches (43 starts) for Philadelphia, scoring once and adding three assists before being acquired by Chivas USA in a trade. Farfán then made 14 appearances and 10 starts with Chivas USA prior his loan move to Chiapas.

“He is a versatile player that can compete in many different positions for us," Cosmos coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese said. "He brings with him valuable experience having played in North America and at the top level in Mexico. We welcome him to the club."

Farfán said: “I’m excited about this new challenge with the Cosmos. “I’m excited to move back to the States and start working with the team in preparation for the season.”

In serving his two-year residency with the U.S. U-17 national team, Farfán competed at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Peru. From 2006-07 he started 15 matches at California State University, Fullerton, earning second team All-Big West honors. Farfán was in Club América’s youth program before heading to Philadelphia.
