FC Edmonton scored its first two goals of the 2016 NASL Spring Season and picked up its first victory in a Canadian Derby game against Ottawa Fury FC at Clarke Field on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, FC Edmonton (1-1-2, 4 points) jumped on top in the 46th minute when center back Albert Watson scored from a corner kick, the Eddies’ first goal of the Spring Season in the club’s fourth match. Watson’s header came from Sainey Nyassi’s corner.
Jake Keegan doubled the score in the 69th minute when he took a 50-yard lead pass over the top from Dustin Corea, trapped, turned and struck a shot with his left foot inside the near post that eluded a defender and Ottawa (0-1-3, 1) goalkeeper Romuald Peiser.
An injury to his right leg forced out Canada national team and Ottawa captain Julian de Guzman in the game’s 27th minute. He was replaced by Mauro Eustáquio.
The two teams will face each other again in a home-and-home preliminary-round series (at Edmonton on May 11 and at Ottawa on May 18) in the Amway Canadian Championship, with the winner advancing to the semifinals against the Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS.
