FC Edmonton jumped up to fourth place in the Spring Season Standings and sit just two points behind league-leading Minnesota United.
FC Edmonton broke on top in the 13th minute as New York (4W-0D-3L, 12 points) allowed its first goal during first-half play all season. The scoring play started in the Eddies’ defensive half when Dustin Corea launched a long lead pass to Jason Plumhoff. Plumhoff controlled the ball in front of defender Carlos Mendes and managed to shake free for shot low to the near post past goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer. It was the first goal of Plumhoff’s NASL career.
Yohandry Orozco got the Cosmos even in the 22nd minute when he took a crossing pass from Jairo Arrieta, cut the ball back past defender Papé Diakité and hit a left-footed shot past Matt VanOekel from the middle of the penalty area.
The Eddies (3-2-2, 11) retook the lead in the 74th minute when Ayoze was shown a yellow card for a hard tackle on Corea along the right flank. Adam Eckersley floated the free kick to the far post where Diakité, Edmonton’s towering center back, put a powerful header past Maurer.
The loss ended New York’s two-game winning streak and was the team’s third loss in four road games so far this season. The Eddies are unbeaten in their last four matches.
