The New York Cosmos maintained their five-point lead over FC Edmonton in the Fall Season Standings when the teams battled to a 0-0 draw at Shuart Stadium on Saturday night. The Cosmos extended their home unbeaten streak to 16 games dating back to last year as the Eddies are without a victory in their last five games (0-4-1).

In the 19th minute, New York (9W-4D-2L, 31 points Fall; 15-4-6, 49 Combined) midfielder Juan Arango rattled a free kick from 25 yards off the upper angle, where the post meets the crossbar. After a scoreless first half, the Cosmos pressed for the opening goal, but failed to break through. FC Edmonton’s young Canadian midfielder Ben Fisk had an excellent chance in the 51st minute that curved wide.

Eddies (7-5-2, 26 Fall; 12-7-5, 43 Combined) goalkeeper Matt VanOekel came up big when he made two saves seconds apart in the waning minutes of the second half to deny New York. First he turned aside a header by Sebastían Guenzatti at the far post, then made a reflex save on Adam Moffat’s volley from a corner kick on the near post.

The game marked Cosmos captain Carlos Mendes' 100th appearance for the team.
