The Dutch-American player is typically on the field as a midfielder or striker and has proven to excel in either position. He kicked off his career in early 2002 in Cali, Colombia, with the U19 team for Deportivo de Cali. Later that year, Van Kanten made his European debut in a stint with the English Middlesbrough U19 team. In his time abroad, Van Kanten has appeared for various European teams including the reserve team for Eerste Divisie’s FC Volendam and AF Setúbal’s second division team Amora. Van Kanten wrapped up his time abroad with a brief spell in the Belgium reserve team before heading back to the states.
He started his career back up in 2007 and made a debut for the United Soccer League’s Miami FC before he took a brief hiatus from the professional leagues. This past year, Van Kanten returned to the pitch to lead Miami Dade FC as its captain to the semi-finals of the American Premier Soccer League Championship. He will be continuing his South Florida soccer career with Miami FC to proudly represent his hometown’s NASL team for its inaugural season.
